A method of detecting and selectively identifying photoluminescent mineral activators and their host minerals in a geological sample including the steps of: a) directing a beam of optical energy onto the sample, the beam including wavelengths suitable for exciting photoluminescence in the host minerals; b) providing an abrupt interruption to the beam; c) detecting a photoluminescent emission arising from the sample after a predetermined time-delay measured from the interruption; d) dispersing the photoluminescent emission to create a spectrum; e) directing the spectrum onto an array of photodetectors, each photodetecto r covering a specific wavelength band, the array of photodetectors covering wavelength bands together spanning a desired spectral region; f) measuring the output of each the photodetector over a desired time interval, and recording the output in digital form on a data acquisition system; g) repeating steps c to f a plurality of times and progressively increasing the time- delay, for producing a databank of time-resolved photoluminescent spectra comprising a time-resolved photoluminescent spectrum at each selected time delay; and h) processing the databank of time-resolved photoluminescent spectra to identify the activators responsible for individual emission peaks in the spectra, and the host minerals being activated.
