The monitoring device uses at least one sensor attached to the outside wall of the storage tank (10), at the bottom end of a non-transparent outer cladding (13) enclosing the tank wall (11). The sensor can be provided by a sensor cable (22) for detection of fluids and/or gases, contained within a catchment space (20) at the bottom of the outer cladding, which has a hollow internal space (18) communicating with the catchment space.
