PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper discharge device for a paper sheet printer which can prevent deformation and damage of a paper retainer member in the case of applying a use condition different from the ordinarily use condition. SOLUTION: This device is constituted by providing a detection means detecting a paper retainer member for whether it is positioned or not in a refuge taking position so as to make rising incapable of a lift table when the detection means detects the paper retainer member not positioned in the refuge taking position, the paper retainer member in the refuge taking position, when it is pushed up by rising of the lift table, acts in accordance with pushing up in a manner wherein the detection means judges the paper retainer member not positioned in the refuge taking position.
