PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber by which a stable high strength optical fiber is easily obtained without devising any special countermeasure to prevent foreign matter from getting into a porous glass preform in its manufacture. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing an optical fiber by drawing an optical fiber preform consisting of a core and a clad, a step for heat-treating the optical fiber preform prior to drawing is carried out.
