BACKUP AND RESTORE SYSTEM FOR DATA DERIVED FROM A PLURALITY OF HOST EQUIPMENT IN HETEROGENEOUS ENVIRONMENT

The invention concerns an automatic backup and restore system for data derived from a plurality of host equipment in heterogeneous environment, comprising a backup server including at least a buffer hard disc, the backup server being connected to each element of the computer equipment via at least a computer network and to physical backup units consisting of backup management units and tape management units, the backup server being controlled by a supervising programme ensuring communication between the various elements of the system and processing exchanged digital data. The invention is characterised in that the backup server comprises an emulation programme for simulating a backup equipment compatible with the environment of any one of the computer equipment elements to be saved, and for recording an image of part at least of the discs of the host equipment elements and for transforming data exchanged with the various equipment elements into single-format data for exchanges with the backup server.
