<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical control element having a fast wavelength conversion function which can perform low power operation, does not need a wavelength filter and can perform the same wavelength conversion. SOLUTION: A symmetrical Mach-Zehnder circuit having a filter function is adopted for a phase modulator with a filter of a wavelength conversion circuit of the optical control element, and the cross section shape of an area having a gain of a waveguide constituting an SOA is made to change according to a place. Thus, the output waveform of light to be converted that does not have a 'skirt' can be obtained. Since the phase modulator with a filter separates input light from output light, a wavelength filter does not have to be installed at an output side port. For this reason, even in the case a wavelengthλi of signal light is the same as a wavelengthλj of wavelength conversion light to be converted, the problem that light prior to wavelength conversion becomes noise to be mixed with output light so that noise can be produced is avoided. Accordingly, it is possible to provide an optical control element having a fast wavelength conversion function capable of performing the same wavelength conversion.</p> |
