PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple manufacturing method of a phenol-modified polycyclic aromatic oligomer which has a ratio of formaldehyde/phenols being >=1, the manufacture being difficult by a conventional method. SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method of the aromatic oligomer comprising condensing a polycyclic aromatic compound and at least one phenol selected from the group consisting of phenol and m-substituted alkyl phenols with formaldehyde, when the polycyclic aromatic compound moiety in the aromatic oligomer is made one mole, a phenols moiety being 0.01-0.35 mole, and its number-average molecular weight being 300-1,500, the method comprises reacting (a) the polycyclic aromatic compound with (c) the formaldehydes in the presence of an acid catalyst, then adding to the reaction mixture (b) the phenols and a hydrocarbon solvent, and reacting a resultant product in the presence of the acid catalyst.
