PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly perform picture detection for a negative film as well as a positive film without changing an algorithm. SOLUTION: The quantity of light transmitted through a negative film 3 or a positive film 4 out of light radiated from a light emitting part 51a is detected by a light reception part 51b. When the positive film 4 is set by a film setting part 82, the distribution of transmission quantity data of detected light is inverted by an inversion part 83 before discrimination in a discrimination part 83. Thus the positive film 4 is properly subjected to picture detection in the same manner as the negative film by the discrimination part 83 using an algorithm for negative film which can discriminate pictures and inter-frame parts of the negative film 3.
