PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a film discriminating apparatus capable of improving the throughput of an equipment for processing a film by eliminating the setting of the film by an operator. SOLUTION: The amount of light that is transmitted through a film 2 a light that is radiated from an emission section 10a of a film detection sensor 10 is detected by a light reception section 10b, and it is discriminated whether the film 2 that is supplied to a film scanner 1 is a negative film 3 or a positive one 4 based on the amount of transmission data of the detected light. Since the setting of the film scanner 1 is automatically switched so as to correspond to the discriminated film 2, eliminating the need for setting the film 2 to the film scanner 1 by an operator, is made unnecessary.
