PURPOSE: An ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) interface device having a receiving cell header converting unit is provided to convert a full-range of VPI/VCI(Virtual Path Indicator/Virtual Channel Indicator) value included in a header of a cell received from the network into a designated range of VPI/VCI value for an APC(ATM Port Controller) to accept the VPI/VCI value, so as to eliminate a limit of the VPI/VCI range. CONSTITUTION: An STM-1(Synchronous Transfer Mode-1) framer(110) extracts a frame from the network through a link in an ATM cell, to transmit the ATM cell to an APC(140) interfacing with an UTOPIA(Universal Test and Operation PHY Interface for ATM). Also, the STM-1 framer(110) converts an ATM cell transmitted from the APC(140) into a frame, to transmit the frame to the network through a corresponding link. A VPI/VCI range converter(120) extracts a VPI/VCI value from a header of the cell transmitted from the framer(110), receives a conversion VPI/VCI value from a CAM(Count Access Memory)(130) based on the extracted VPI/VCI value, and update the VPI/VCI value included in the cell header to the conversion VPI/VCI value received from the CAM(130). And the APC(140) delivers the ATM cell transmitted from the VPI/VCI range converter(120) to a corresponding AAL(ATM Adaptation Layer) processor based on connection information, and transmits an ATM cell delivered from the corresponding AAL processor directly to the STM-1 framer(110) based on the connection information.
