PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a synthetic gas by an auto- thermal reforming method (ATR), in which the production of soot or the occurrence of a hot spot due to peroxidation are suppressed because a gaseous starting material and an oxidizing gas are excellently mixed in a partial oxidation zone in a reactor to advance the uniform partial oxidation reaction. SOLUTION: The reactor is composed of an upper zone where a gaseous lower hydrocarbon and the oxidizing gas are separately jetted and mixed, an intermediate zone where the partial oxidation reaction of the mixture of the lower hydrocarbon with the oxidizing gas are carried out and a lower zone where a steam reforming reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst. The upper zone has a burner composed of a plurality of concentric double tube nozzles for jetting the oxidizing gas from the inside nozzle and the gaseous lower hydrocarbon from the outside nozzle respectively toward the intermediate zone. As the catalyst, a catalyst prepared by supporting 0.001-0.1 mol% rhodium or ruthenium on a magnesium oxide support and having <=1.0 m<2> /g specific surface area is used. |
