PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lactone derivative exhibiting excellent rooting activity, and to provide a plant growth regulator containing the same as an active ingredient and therefore having an excellent rooting induction effect. SOLUTION: This lactone derivative is expressed by the general formula (I) (R<1> and R<2> are each H, a halogen, a 1-6C alkyl or a 1-6C alkoxy, and A is methylene, vinylene, imino, O or S, provided that neither R<1> nor R<2> is H when A is imino, and R<1> and R<2> are each H when A is O; and n is an integer of 1-4). The lactone derivative exhibits the excellent rooting activity. The plant growth regulator contains the lactone derivative as the active ingredient.
