PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flocculant which has high sedimentation properties of red mud in a method for producing aluminum hydroxide by a Bayer's process. SOLUTION: Dextran is introduced into a flocculant, and the average molecular weight or the flocculant is controlled to within 2,000 to 1,000,000, wherein dextran consists of a polymer containing glucose or a derivative of glucose as a recurring unit. The flocculant has anα-1, 6 bond of glucose or the derivative of glucose as the main bond, and partly has anα-1, 4 bond or anα-1, 3 bond.
