PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic automatic tensioner eliminating function lowering, producing no abnormal sound, and having high reliability by preventing a check ball from butting on one side of a ball seat and allowing the check ball to seat on a whole circular contact line of the ball seat with its contact thereto with no time difference. SOLUTION: This hydraulic automatic tensioner 10 is provided with a high- pressure oil chamber 26, a low-pressure oil chamber 27, and a check valve 28 capable of communicating the high-pressure oil chamber 26 and the low- pressure oil chamber 27 in one direction from the low-pressure oil chamber 27 to the high-pressure oil chamber 26. This tensioner is also provided with a loose insertion part 1 regulating lateral deviation of the check ball 30 to the annular ball seat 32, when the check ball 30 of the check valve 28 separates from the annular ball seat 32.
