PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for laser beam machining by which the time required before beginning a machining is shortened on a laser beam machining device. SOLUTION: By the method for laser beam machining, the distance between a point on a work from which the machining is begun and respective parts for recognition of position and the distances between the respective parts for recognition of position are calculated, the distances of routes from respective parts for recognition of position to the point from which the machining is begun are found from the sum of the calculated distances, a route having the minimum distance is selected from a plurality of found distances of routes and the detection means is moved along the selected route.
