PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lower vibration or noise caused by impact of pressing a separation roller even when the number of loaded sheets is small. SOLUTION: This sheet feeder 11 is provided with a pressing plate 21 for loading a plurality of sheets P, a separation roller 5 arranged on the sheet loading side of the pressing plate 21 and capable of feeding pressed sheets, a pressing plate spring 72 for pressing the pressing plate 21 for pressure- contacting the sheets with the separation roller 5, a release cam capable of retaining the pressing plate 21 away from the separation roller 5 against the pressure of the pressing plate spring 72 and also capable of releasing the retention, and with an elastically deformable separation sheet member 73 positioned opposite to the separation roller 5. The separation sheet member 73 is so designed as to catch the separation roller 5 and bend when the release cam releases retention of separation for the pressing plate 21 to be energized by the pressing plate spring 72 against the separation roller 5.
