PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a liquid crystal display device thin and lightweight and to simplify the structure. SOLUTION: An upper part transparent substrate is utilized as a light transmission plate by forming an optical control layer on the upper surface of the upper part transparent substrate and arranging a light source on the side face of the light control layer. Also, a thin transparent film with a different refractive index is arranged within the upper part transparent substrate to control light depending on refractive index difference.
