PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective device for a machine which does not necessitates a photoelectric detector for auxiliary adjustment and enables the setting of safety distance of a protective means by a single operator or perfectly automatically. SOLUTION: When a light beam is shut down, a stopping means brakes operation movement and a switching-off means performs the role of switching off the stopping means just before the light beam is shut down. Further, a means which performs a first movement of the protective device in so far as the light beam is intercepted by means of a machine part supporting the protective device and performs a second movement of the protective device in the inverse direction is disposed, the displacement or moving distance which sets the safety distance can be determined beforehand by electrical measurement and/or control means.
