PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expansion joint which positively protects a cover member from deforming, copes with displacement such as jolts and differential settlement, is simple in structure, and low in cost. SOLUTION: The expansion joint is formed by attaching the cover member 4 via a holder 3 to an interval S between building skeletons 1, 2. According to the expansion joint, the holder 3 is formed of a base portion 8 borne on the building skeletons 1, 2 on both sides thereof, and a cover member bearing portion 9 which is arranged over the base portion 8 to bear the cover member for covering the gap S. Then, the expansion joint has holding portions 13 on the building skeletons 1, 2, which hold the base portion 8 in a manner being slidable in a lateral direction of the gap S.
