PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for treating waste water, in which flocculating and settling treatment or floating treatment can stably be carried out efficiently while the usage of a flocculant is reduced. SOLUTION: In the waste water treating method, the flocculating and settling treatment or the floating treatment is carried out after mixing the waste water and a synthetic fiber or the synthetic fiber and a heavy metal collecting agent; a heavy metal collecting agent-impregnated synthetic fiber; or an organic macromolecular flocculant-impregnated or -mixed synthetic fiber. An inorganic flocculant and/or the organic macromolecular flocculant can furthermore be added to the waste water and mixed them.
