PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for controlling a flashover phenomenon of a vehicle ignition system is provided to reduce a disharmony of an engine by preventing a flashover created when the vehicle ignition system is operated. CONSTITUTION: An ignition coil(320) is operated according to an engine control operation, which is programmed in an engine control section. As the ignition coil(320) is operated, boosted voltage is supplied into an ignition plug(340) so that a flame ignition is carried out. Then, flashover voltage is detected by a flashover voltage detecting section(350). A dwell time supplied to the ignition coil(320) is adjusted in a predetermined level depending on flashover voltage detected by the flashover voltage detecting section(350). When flashover voltage is detected, an indication lamp(370) is turned on so as to display the flashover phenomenon.
