The present invention relates to an aqueous coating composition containing a) an aqueous solution ar dispersion of a polyol component containing at least one water-dilutable polyacrylate resin having hydroxyl groups and a molecular weight (Mn) above 500, b) a polyisocyanate component which has a viscosity of 50 to 10,000 mPa.s at 23.degree.C and is emulsified in component a), and c) 0.5 to 6% by weight, based on the weight of component a), of a water-soluble polyether polyol having a molecular weight of 300 to 1000, wherein the coating composition has an NC0/OH equivalent ratio of 0.5:1 to 5:1, based on the isocyanate groups of component b) and the alcoholic hydroxyl groups of components a) and c).
