PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively wash off flocculated lumps of a coating solution or foreign matters such as waste refuse bonded to and accumulated on the leading end of the slit of a coating head in a short time. SOLUTION: In an extrusion coating method, the feed of the coating solution to the coating head 14 is once stopped to bring the leading end of the coating head 14 and a web 16 to a spaced-apart state. Thereafter, the coating solution is instantaneously fed to the coating head 14 at a stroke and the coating solution discharged from the leading end of the slit 12 is removed from the coating head 14 and, subsequently, the web 16 and the leading end of the coating head 14 are again brought to an approach state to start coating. A series of these operations are incorporated in coating operation.
