PURPOSE: A method for controlling a self cleaning of an EGR valve is provided to prevent carbon from being accumulated on the EGR valve by operating the EGR valve for a predetermined time even if an engine is operated. CONSTITUTION: Various operating information of an engine are inputted into an ECU(S1). Then, whether the engine is operated or not(S2) is determined. If the engine is operated, whether an EGR valve is under a cleaning condition is determined. If the EGR valve is under the cleaning condition, the EGR valve is operated with the efficiency of 0 to 100%(S4). Then, it is determined whether step 4 is repeated for predetermined times. If the engine is not operated in step 2, the EGR valve is operated with the efficiency of 0 to 100%(S6). Then, it is determined whether step 6 is repeated for predetermined times(S7).
