The invention relates to a printer comprising a chargeable image cylinder (2 ), for example, an electrophotographic or ionographic printer, in particular, a laser or LED printer for imprinting a medium (1). According to the invention , the image cylinder (2), serves to transfer toner to the medium (1). Said printer comprises a charging unit (3) for charging the image cylinder (2). A toner unit (4), by means of which toner is applied to the image cylinder (2) , is arranged, in the direction of rotation of the image cylinder (2), at a predetermined angular distance from the charging unit (3). A writing unit (5 ) is also provided, by means of which a beam (5a) for changing the electrical charge on the image cylinder (2) can be guided over said image cylinder. In addition, a sensor (6) is provided for detecting the charge of the image cylinder (2). The printer is characterized in that the sensor (6) detects th e charge of the image cylinder (2) at a predetermined angular distance .alpha. from the charging unit (3).
