Exhaust gases produced when refining pig iron with oxygen are led off and cooled, without contacting the atmosphere, from a cap 2 fitted over the mouth of a converter 1 by introducing a cooling gas, e.g. blast furnace gas at 70‹ C. or by-product nitrogen, from a conduit 10 through an annular slot 9 into a housing 8 situated in a conduit 7, which leads off the gases to a dust removing device via conduit 15, at a point beyond a water-cooled damper 13, which is closed while oxygen is being blown through lance 6 on to the pig-iron bath in the converter. Water spray nozzles 12 may be provided on the conduit 7 for further cooling. The cap and conduit 7 are swung down when the converter is tipped over by the operation of a lifting device such as a jack 16.</p> |
