An apparatus for producing a pipeline includes a plurality of vehicles f or straddling a ditch. Al of the vehicles are carried by wide, relatively soft tires for minimizing damage to the soil surface. A first vehicle receives, aligns and maintains sections of pipe in position over a trench while effecting a first weld. Additional welding of the joints between pipe sections is effected in successive vehicles, and the weld joint is inspected and then coated with plastic. Finally, the pipeline is deposited in the trench, and the latter is backfilled by the last vehicle in the train of vehicles.
