PURPOSE: A method for processing read data of a magnetic disk drive is provided to preserve data written on a magnetic disk even when a data read error is generated in the case that the data written on the magnetic disk is read. CONSTITUTION: Data read is reattempted by the programmed maximum number of times in the case that a data read error due to an error sector is generated when data written on a magnetic data is read(44,46,48). When the data is read while data read is being reattempted, the read data is recorded in an allocated spare sector, the error sector is processed as a defect and the number of the error sector is registered in an error sector table. In the case that the data read error is generated though data read is reattempted by the maximum number of times(50), the error sector is processed as a defect, the number of the error sector is registered in the error sector table, and then the spare sector is allocated(54).
