PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having excellent cycle life characteristic and high-rate charge-discharge characteristic by restraining expansion and contraction of a negative electrode active material due to charge and discharge and deposition of lithium due to an overvoltage. SOLUTION: This nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery uses a positive electrode using a transition metal compound oxide containing lithium as a positive electrode active material, and a negative electrode using a carbon material capable of storing and releasing lithium as a negative electrode active material. The battery is characterized in that the negative electrode active material is a low-crystalline carbon material having an interplanar spacing (d002) of 0.37-0.40 nm, and the potential thereof in storing lithium is 30 mV or higher with the potential of metal lithium as the reference.
