PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which emits light with high luminance, has high durability, is excellent in stability, and has a long life. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element includes an organic thin film layer of one layer or a plurality of layers containing a luminescent layer between a positive electrode and a negative electrode, and at least one layer of the organic thin film layer contains an aromatic methylidene compound expressed by a formula 1. (Ar: a bivalent naphthalene residue, R1 , R11 : an alkyl group, alkoxy group or the like, n1 , n11 : an integer of 0-4, R2 , R22 , R3 , R33 : an aromatic group, aromatic heterocyclic group or the like, R4 , R44 , R5 , R55 , R6 , R66 : hydrogen, cyano group or the like).
