PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heater and a glow plug with high reliability capable of almost eliminating resistance in passing an engaging part at an initial starting time of attaching a heating tube to a main metal fitting, and capable of suppressing an increase of a pressing load of the heating tube to the main metal fitting more than necessary. SOLUTION: The heating tube 3 which constitutes the heater (the glow plug) 1 includes a fixed part 21 which is fixed to the engaging part 12 formed on the main metal fitting 2 in a state that the heating tube 3 is pressed and fixed to the engaging part 12 of the main metal fitting 2, and a proximal end side end part 25 projected to the inside of the main metal fitting 2, and further includes a small diameter part 23 having an outer diameter smaller than an inner diameter of the engaging part 12, a base end side large diameter part 22 formed between the fixing part 21 and the small diameter part 23 and having an outer diameter larger than the inner diameter of the engaging part 12, and a distal end side large diameter part 24 formed adjacent to a distal end side of the fixing part 21 and having an outer diameter larger than the inner diameter of the engaging part 12.
