PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently carrying out decomposition treatment of a chelating agent after forming a complex and a method for simply recovering a heavy metal by which a waste liquid can readily be treated by conventional waste water-treating facilities without using a specific chemical when recovering the heavy metal by carrying out decomposition treatment of the chelating agent in a complex of the chelating agent with the heavy metal. SOLUTION: This method for decomposing the chelating agent into a readily biodegradable compound comprises irradiating at least one kind of compound selected from a compound such as (S,S)-ethylenediamine-N N'-disuccinic acid and a compound such as (S,S)-iminodisuccinic acid and its salt with ultraviolet light. This method for recovering the heavy metal comprises forming the complex of the compound with the heavy metal, recovering the complex, decomposing the chelating agent with ultraviolet irradiation, depositing the heavy metal and recovering the heavy metal.
