PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the weight and cost of a collector 24 by reducing requisite strength of the collector 24, and shorten a vehicle mounting space or increase an overall engine widthΔL1 and a crushable zoneΔL3 by arranging a portionΔL2 of the collector 24 in the crushable zoneΔL3. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine generates output corresponding to an intake air quantity. A variable valve system 1 can continuously vary a valve lift characteristic of intake valves, and the collector 24 connects to intake ports 42 of a plurality of cylinders. The collector 24 is arranged on the engine width side of a cylinder head 40. The variable valve system 1 can regulate the intake air quantity to reduce an internal pressure of the collector substantially to an atmospheric pressure (for example, -50 mmHg).
