PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stirling engine which is equipped with a check valve being easy of design, abundant in durability, and easy of attachment. SOLUTION: This stirling engine is equipped with compression space 4 which is demarcated by a piston 3 set in a cylinder 1 and a displacer 2, and the piston 3 forms an aperture between itself and the inwall of the cylinder 1, and this is equipped with a communication passage which connects this aperture with the compression space 4, and the displacer 2 forms an aperture between itself and the inwall of the cylinder 1, and it is equipped inside with a communication passage which connects this aperture with the compression space 4, and valve element storage space 19 wherein a ball valve 21 is put inside is made in each communication passage, and the valve element storage space 19 is equipped with an inlet 16 leading to the compression space 4, and the ball valve 21 is of such size that it blocks at least the inlet 16, and besides it is arranged so that it can move freely at least in the direction of the communication passage within the valve element storage space 19.
