PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a forming die for glass forming which is stable even at a high temperature as a formed die material, is free of roughcasting surfaces and has good die parting properties in order to obtain the glass forming, such as an optical glass element and a glass substrate for magnetic recording media having high shape accuracy and surface characteristics. SOLUTION: The components constituting at least the forming surface of the forming die forming the glass forming consist of a combination of at least one kind of the components selected from the group of Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ir, Os and Re and at least one kind of the components selected from the group of Cr and Al and the total of one kind of the components selected from the group of the Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ir, Os and Re described above exceeds 50 at.%. The forming die is heated in an oxidizing atmosphere, by which a layer containing at least one kind of the component among oxides of Cr and oxides of Al is formed on the extreme surface of the forming die.
