A dual-purpose printing element useful as a printing plate or recording film comprises a transparent substrate on which is a coating having a layer of optical density /-3.0 in both visible and UV light, together with an outer scratch-resistant layer. Independent claims are also included for: (i) production of the dual-function element by coating the substrate with the above layers and then exposing the product; and (ii) graphic arts tools functioning as a film and/or plate and constructed from the following modular components, with each tool having a substrate and an ablatable coating: (a) a polyester or aluminum substrate; and (b) an ablatable coating containing carbon black, a UV-absorbing dye, an amino resin, a nitrocellulose resin and a crosslinking catalyst. |
