Method for operation of a motor vehicle tank system with a tank (10) and an absorption filter (30) for absorption of gases evaporating from the fuel. The system also has a shut off valve (36) and a fuel level sensor (24). During filling of the tank (10) the fuel level is measured and when a maximum level is reached, the shut off valve is automatically activated. The invention also relates to a corresponding tank system.
