The electronic controller assesses the value of stored external adaptations against a benchmark value (B), and additionally as a function of the benchmark value of the old external adaptation (a-fremd-alt), it is decided whether consideration is given to marked or slight alteration of a characteristic parameter ( DELTA a-eigen) in setting a new external adaptation (a-fremd-neu). Marked alteration is adopted when the value of the old external adaptation is high and weak. When the assessment value of the old external adaptation is low the value of the necessary new external adaptation is fixed as a function of the value of the characteristic adaptation variation ( DELTA a-eigen).
