FIELD: instrumentation, mechanical engineering. SUBSTANCE: procedure can find use while testing state and class of machining of surface of articles. According to procedure layer of material is so applied on surface that no diffusive layer is formed with material of surface. Surface is irradiated with flux of protons or deuterons. Flux of backward scattered protons or deutrons is recorded as tested parameter and thickness of layer of variable composition of material of applied layer and of material of surface corresponding to degree of roughness is found on its basis.
