An anal pulse oximeter device includes an anal canal surface (111), a rectal-vault cuff (106) having a leading portion and a trailing portion, the trailing portion substantially proximate to the anal canal surface, and a pulse oximeter assembly (102). A method of using the device icludes positioning an insertion end of the pulse oximeter device against an anus, advancing the pulse oximeter device until the rectal-vault cuff substantially clears an in ternal anal sphincter, and withdrawing the pulse oximeter device until the rectal-vault cuff contacts a rectal vault. The anal canal surface is either an antomical anal canal surface or a surgical anal canal surface. |
