A process for producing a ß−oxonitrile compound or alkali metal salt thereof, characterized by reacting a carboxylic ester represented by the general formula (1): R<sp>1</sp>CO<sb>2</sb>R<sp>2</sp> (1) (wherein R<sp>1</sp> and R<sp>2</sp> each represents a group not participating in the reaction, provided that R<sp>2</sp> is not hydrogen) with a nitrile compound represented by the general formula (2): R<sp>3</sp>CH<sb>2</sb>CN (2) (wherein R<sp>3</sp> represents alkyl) and a base at 145 to 300°C in a closed vessel to form an alkali metal salt of a ß−oxonitrile compound represented by the general formula (3): (3) (wherein R<sp>1</sp> and R<sp>3</sp> are the same as defined above) and optionally neutralizing the salt with an acid.
