The charging control method allows the charging current supplied from the generator (3) to the vehicle battery (1) to be reduced from its maximum value, without alteration in the generator output or the power requirement of the onboard electrical network (19), so that an additional load (5), e.g. an auxiliary heater for the passenger compartment, can be supplied by the generator when its power requirements are not fully covered. An Independent claim for a device for controlling charging of a vehicle battery is also included.
