Method whereby dependent on reflected and received transmission light a number of signals are generated. To generate a positive or negative object detection signal a difference in the received signal is compared with a difference threshold value, whereby for a change between positive and negative object detection signal a switching hysteresis is generated that is different for foreground and background areas. An Independent claim is made for an optoelectronic sensor for detection of the presence or absence of an object in the foreground or background of an observation area.
