PURPOSE: An electric power steering system is provided to reduce unnecessary power consumption by rotating a steering wheel and making a motor pump driven by a torque sensor. CONSTITUTION: An electric power steering system has a torque sensor(20) sensing rotational torque in steering a steering wheel(10); a motor pump(40) supplying power to a reaction force unit(30); and an ECU(Electronic Control Unit,50) connected with the torque sensor and the motor pump. The ECU controls the motor pump according to a signal of the torque sensor. The ECU compares the signal of the torque with a predetermined value and operates the motor pump just when the signal is over the predetermined value. Accordingly, unnecessary power consumption is reduced.
