A composition comprising: (a) a pharmaceutically effective amount of water-soluble fullerene compounds of one or more of the formulae I-VI: where L is a linker of the formula X is NH or O, R is H or lower alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 1-6, and D1 is a dendron of the formula D2 is a dendron of the formula D3 is a dendron of the formula a, c and e are the same or different and each is 1 or 2, b, d and f are the same or different and each is 1-6 and w is 1-6, mixtures thereof, and water soluble salts thereof, and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The composition is used to treat HIV.
