The thread cutting tap has a shaft (10) with a clamping drive section (12) at one end and a profiled thread cutter at the other. The cutter profile is attachable and retained by a clamp against rotation. The profile has a short axial length and a feed cone on its exterior. The profile and shaft have guide formations for automatic centering of the profile on the shaft when fitted.
