The calender to polish the surfaces of a fiber web (2), especially of paper or cardboard, has a wide roller nip (4) to heat the web which is formed by the gap between a roller (5) and a rotating mantle (6), which are pressed together over a part of their circumference. A steam jet (12) is aligned at the web, as it emerges from the nip exit (11). The steam jet unit has at least one steam generator (13), to deliver a steam jet stream (17) backwards against the web. Steam can be applied to both web surfaces.
