PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for authentication and a method for registering a person are provided to prevent against the wrongful use of a smart entry system. CONSTITUTION: A smart entry system comprises a passive entry authenticating section(13), a biometric authenticating section(103) and a control section(11). The passive entry authenticating section(13) compares an identification signal sent from a portable unit with an identification signal previously stored in a storage section(105). A biometric authenticating section(103) compares the biometric information of a user inputted through a sensor section(101) with the biometric information registered in a biometric database(104). A control section(11) authenticates an authorized user when there is agreement in both the identification-signal comparison result and the biometric-information comparison result, and controls a lock system(12) to unlock a door lock of an automobile(1).
