A method of manufacturing sliding clasp fasteners comprises removing fastener elements from a string of fastener elements of synthetic plastic material which constitutes projections from an elongated rib interconnecting the fastener elements, the elements being removed from the rib at such locations along the string and in such number as to form the string into a series of interconnected portions each portion having fastener elements extending its length and being connected to the rib portions which remain. As shown, a string of fastener elements 10 is fed intermittently through a punching machine P (see Fig. 4), comprising a punch 15 reciprocable between guides 16, 17 and co-operating with a spring block 18. The punch 15 first compresses the elements 10 and then severs them against the edge of a recess 22, in which the rib 11 is accommodated, during the downward motion of the punch. Elements 10 are removed to leave an element free portion of the rib 11 connecting portions S1, S 2 , as in Fig. 1. The string is then sewn to the edge of a tape T to form a stringer, which may be cut into lengths as required. In a modification, two interlocked strips of material (see Fig. 2 not shown) are passed through a punching mechanism, Figs. 7-9 (not shown), the method of operation being as above.</p> |
