A hollow rectangular section is extruded and passed through a cooling chamber 7, a vacuum chamber 8 which sucks it against a guide 6, and further cooling chambers 13, 14. Simultaneously a filling material e.g. foamed polystyrene or polyurethane is extruded through a nozzle 10 in the mandrel 11. In a modification, Fig. 5, only two broad bands are extruded one above the other and foamed resin is introduced through nozzles 19. Steel belts 20 covered with polytetrafluoroethylene seal the edges of the bands. In modifications, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) the extrusion nozzle may be shaped to form recesses and projections on the finished article.
